Mersal producers under pressure mute dialogues on GST in Telugu version

The makers of Vijay starrer ‘Mersal’ have muted the dialogues mocking GST and Digital India from its Telugu version. This comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Tamil Nadu unit objected to the references in the film. BJP leader H Raja, state president Tamilisai Soundrajan and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan had earlier demanded that the references should be deleted.

The producers of Vijay’s Mersal, which was mired in controversies over its dialogues on GST,  have succumbed to the pressure by the Bhartiya Janata Party and have decided to mute the dialogues in the film.

Although, the movie, that released on October 18, has already grossed close to 175 crores because of the overwhelming response from the audience.

This decision was taken a day after Vijay thanked his fans and fellow industry people for standing by his film and lending support through social media.

Mersal has been making headlines ever since its release on October 18 as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that the film has made incorrect references to the Goods and Services Tax.

BJP leaders, including Raja, a national secretary of the party, state president Tamilisai Soundarajan and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, have been demanding that the “incorrect” references be deleted from the big-budget flick.

However, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, his senior colleague P Chidambaram, DMK working president M K Stalin, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, veteran actor Kamal Haasan and a host of Tamil cinema industry representatives supported the cast and crew of the film.

Actor Vishal had earlier accused Raja of advocating piracy by watching the movie online, a charge rejected by latter.

Mersal, directed by Atlee, also features Samantha, Nithya Menon and Kajal Aggarwal.
